Chapter 9

Liam’s hand rested on my lower back as he held the door for me to walk through the main entrance at his parents’ home. As planned, we were meeting for dinner. I presumed this would be a larger gathering than usual, considering that Nathan was bringing the alleged love of his life whom he’d met yesterday.

Amongst our families, we often had dinner once or twice a week with a rotating cast of attendees. Our footsteps echoed down the hallway, voices carrying from the dining room area. That alone let me know how busy it was. In these old colonial-style homes, the downstairs areas were typically divided with the hallway down the center. The kitchen and perhaps laundry and some type of casual room were usually to one side with a formal dining room and another formal sitting area on the other. When the group was smaller, we usually ate in the kitchen where there was a large table at the back.

Liam glanced down at me just before we reached the archway leading into the dining room and winked. “Now you get to meet Annette again,” he murmured.

“This is the weirdest thing,” I said, stopping and looking at him. “I can’t believe Nathan thinks he’s in love.”

“What if he really is?” Liam countered, his lips twitching at the corners, threatening a grin.

“In a day?” I asked, incredulous we were even having this conversation.

Liam bent down, dipping his head for a quick kiss and sending a jolt of heat through me. “You never know.”

Then he turned, catching my hand in his as we entered the dining room. As I had guessed, it was a full house tonight. Liam’s parents, Alice and Liam Sr., were there of course, along with his younger sister Juliette. Emma, Lea and Jacob, the twins, my parents, both of my brothers who were in town, along with Beatrice Powers, her friend Eva, and Penelope. Opal and Theo Good rounded out the group.

A full house, indeed.

My mother saw me first, calling over from where she stood beside the sideboard loading a plate of food. “Hello, Moira and Liam. Come on over and get some food.”

Liam gave my hand a squeeze before dropping it when we reached the sideboard, where my parents and a few others were clustered. Nathan was standing off to the side with his arm around Annette’s shoulders. She was just as beautiful as I recalled.

She had an almost regal look to her with her glossy dark hair and tall stature. Her eyes met mine, and she inclined her head slightly in recognition. She gave off an air of triumph, and I wished I could understand just what it was she was after.

Liam nudged me with his elbow, and I glanced over, “What?” I asked.

“Dear, that was Liam’s polite way of letting you know you were staring,” my mother said in a low tone, her lips quirking with a smile.

I rolled my eyes. “Whatever.”

I stayed at Liam’s side as we got our food, pausing beside Nathan for introductions on the way to the table.
